Timeform looks ahead to the weekend racing action...

"Godolphin look to have a great chance of registering their sixth success in the Doncaster classic through Rewilding"

The St Leger takes centre stage this weekend, and Godolphin look to have a great chance of registering their sixth success in the Doncaster classic through Rewilding, who is strong favourite after a facile success in the Great Voltigeur at York last month. The Godolphin colt has progressed well this year, finishing a good third in the Derby prior to his York win, and he looks well worth his place at the top of the market. Runner-up in the Voltigeur was Aidan O'Brien's Midas Touch, who had previously finished second to Cape Blanco in the Irish Derby, and is currently second favourite for Saturday's race. Other contenders include English and Irish Oaks heroine Snow Fairy, and the progressive pair Dandino and Arctic Cosmos.

The whole card at Doncaster is excellent, with the extremely competitive Portland handicap among the high-quality supporting races. The market for the five-and-a-half furlong cavalry charge is currently headed by Poet's Place, wide-margin winner of a strong handicap at Haydock last month. There are also two Group 2 events at Town Moor, namely the Champagne Stakes and the Park Stakes. The latter race has attracted a good field, with Sussex Stakes third Premio Loco facing the likes of High Standing and Arabian Gleam. Impressive maiden winner Saamidd is set to face Group-race winners Approve and Waiter's Dream in the Champagne Stakes.

Shortly after the English St Leger, a field of eight will lock horns in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Both Sans Frontieres and Profound Beauty are sure to be towards the head of the market on the back of impressive wins at Group level. Of even more interest at the Curragh is the Group 1 National Stakes, which has drawn several exciting juveniles, including Phoenix winner Zoffany and Futurity winner Pathfork. Both of these colts are well to the fore in the ante-post market for next year's 2000 Guineas. On Sunday, the Arc trials take place at Longchamp, with star filly Midday set to take on the unbeaten Sarafina in a superb renewal of the Prix Vermeille. Also in the field is Sariska, who infamously refused to race at York last time.
