Dermot Weld has a potential Royal Ascot contender on his hands with Moonlit Garden
An Irish maiden which looks sure to throw up some winners in the future...
"She (Moonlit Garden) is reportedly on course for the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and, with the prospect of a lot more to come, deserves her place in that field."
The Yas European Breeders Fund Maiden that traditionally opens the card at the Curragh on 1000 Guineas day has a habit of throwing up good horses; past winners include George Washington, Oratorio and Intense Focus, and this year's renewal looks likely to continue that rich history. The pace seemed fair and the winner was very impressive, while plenty of those further back shaped with promise.
Moonlit Garden created a big impression on her debut, soon taking a good hold in the front rank from the plum draw and skipping clear in the final furlong; she is reportedly on course for the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and, with the prospect of a lot more to come, deserves her place in that field.
Glendaragh seemed to be getting the hang of things late on, sticking on well for pressure to take second close home, and is entitled to do better with this experience under his belt; Kevin Prendergast's juveniles have been uncharacteristically slow to come to hand this year.
Sydney Harbour took a step forward from his debut and will be suited by a step back up in trip, still looking green when initially asked for his effort but keeping on well to almost snatch second.
Emperor Hadrian ran to a similar level as at Gowran but was poorly placed as things went, and may do better still when upped to seven furlongs, finishing well once switched to the outside.
Master Of Hounds made a promising start to his career, at a trip that is likely to prove short of his optimum, slowly away but staying on late to be nearest at the finish.
Anadolu shaped a bit better than the distance beaten would suggest, racing prominently out wide and still a clear second a furlong out.
Great Huzzar has obviously been showing plenty at home (well backed) and should come on from this, briefly looking like he might reward support when challenging over a furlong out.
Heir To The Mint seemed to know what was expected of him, soon prominent, and wasn't given a hard time after getting squeezed out entering the final 1f; he is quite similar in appearance to his stablemate's Free Judgement and Reiteration, who are also by Vindication.
High Ruler is sure to leave this form well behind in time, especially when stepped up in trip; he was beginning to keep on from the rear, under hands and heels, when having to be snatched up a furlong out and wasn't persevered with.
