The E.B.F. MHA Lighting maiden stakes run over six furlongs at Haydock on Friday was won by a subsequent Group winner (Shakespearean) in 2009 and it's a race that has equal potential this time around, the bare form above average and plenty shaping with promise, notably the runner-up.
"Dortmund is likely to have pattern races on the agenda himself, perhaps even straight away, such was the promise of this debut."
Rerouted 's debut was way above average, third in what appeals as one of the strongest 2-y-o maidens of the season so far, and this was a case of getting the job done, below that bare form but not yet the finished article (hung under pressure), and the pair that tried to match him from the front were well beaten off in the end; he'll be in pattern races next, likely to head to Royal Ascot, and remains open to improvement.
Dortmund is likely to have pattern races on the agenda himself, perhaps even straight away, such was the promise of this debut, held back by greenness both at the start (dwelt) and in the finish (hung) but impressing with his mid-race move on the far wing, quickening right through on the bridle, and he's a useful prospect at the very least.
Polar Kite's inexperience was evident beforehand, unruly at the start, and he took a while to learn in the race itself, too, travelling well but not responding when first ridden, allowing the first two to get away before a strong finish; he's bound to do better, at seven furlongs and further later in the year.
Capaill Liath's pedigree is mostly speed and he showed plenty despite not being involved, keen in mid-field and holding his position without being knocked about; he should improve.
Arabian Star shaped better than the result, within himself on the near side and not knocked about in the last two furlongs, and he should show the benefit of this experience next time; his pedigree is a mixed bag, by a speedy sire out of a middle-distance winner.
Newzflash was sharp, able to match the winner for speed until after halfway, but greenness shone once it came to the crunch, hanging left and considerately handled.
