This maiden featured several promising juveniles...
“Runner-up was the heavily-backed Khawlah, who made a hugely promising debut and looks to have a big future”
There were lots of well-bred juveniles representing big yards in this maiden, and it is definitely a race to note. The winner was impressive and the well-backed newcomer, Khawlah, looks a horse to follow, while there were a number of other noteworthy performances.
The winner was Shim Sham, the latest 2-y-o from her yard to be totally transformed by a run. She had made no impression at Newbury on debut less than three weeks earlier, but was a different horse with that experience behind her, travelling powerfully in front and just pushed out to hold the promising runner-up, value for more than the bare margin. Shim Sham is a useful prospect at least, and is reportedly set to step up to listed level straight away. It will be a surprise if she's not very competitive at that level.
Runner-up was the heavily-backed Khawlah, who made a hugely promising debut and looks to have a big future. Her inexperience was evident, with a sluggish start leaving her further back than ideal. She ended up in a pocket on the rail, forcing her rider to switch wide (sacrificing momentum) for a clear run. Once in flow she impressively made up some 5 lengths in the final 1f alone, finishing with a lot more to give as well. The choicely-bred Khawlah is sure to improve, and is very much a filly to follow.
Chinook Wind improved substantially from her debut to finish third, and she should continue to progress given her pedigree. Beaten only by a pair of potential pattern performers, she just lacked acceleration in the last 2f, looking ready for a step up to a mile now. She should break her maiden before long.
Caraboss ran with plenty of promise in fourth, and is another to keep a close eye on. She is bred to excel later in her career over middle distances, so made a very encouraging debut, showing greenness but finishing strongly under no more than hand riding. She looks sure to improve with this run behind her, and is one to follow for the remainder of the year and beyond.
