Sir Michael Stoute: Has a very smart sprinter on his hands in Kingsgate Native
Timeform share their Perspective entries on the Group 2 Temple Stakes, which featured some of the top domestc sprinters...
"KINGSGATE NATIVE had been gelded since last seen nine months ago and confirmed his status as one of the best sprinters in this country in making a winning return"
Plenty of quality on show in a good renewal, the first three home likely bound for Royal Ascot, and Total Gallery was the only disappointment in a race which tested raw speed, the winner doing well to quicken from mid-field, if anything, potentially better than ever.
KINGSGATE NATIVE had been gelded since last seen nine months ago and confirmed his status as one of the best sprinters in this country in making a winning return, and he's likely to make a good fist of things at Royal Ascot for all the competition will be tougher, as this came smoothly to him, his rider never having to resort to the whip as he picked off the front-runners inside the final 1f, acknowledging they probably went off too quickly. There is always a chance he could even improve this year, his career hardly running smoothly previously, this just his fourth start for Sir Michael Stoute.
EQUIANO really has turned over a new leaf this year, providing proof if it were needed that he can do it away from Newmarket, showing typical speed, too much if anything, and headed only well inside the final furlong. This was a better effort than when he won the King's Stand in 2008, but even more will likely be needed if he is to win it again.
BORDERLESCOTT perhaps isn't as far forward as his second in the Palace House on his reappearance suggested, but he's undoubtedly made a sound start to the year and should fare much better at Royal Ascot than he has ever done previously, typically sticking to his task gamely.
SPIN CYCLE ran his race with his reappearance in the Palace House behind him, but this merely underlined that he is vulnerable at this sort of level, able to show off his speed but beaten off inside the final furlong.
TOTAL GALLERY has to be classed as disappointing given how his career went last year and the promise of his reappearance, his Group 1 penalty not enough of an excuse, flat when called upon, the hope being that he is gradually building up to Royal Ascot, when he will be able to race off level weights again.
LOOK BUSY won this last year, but that was on heavy ground with the quality diluted and she struggled against this fierce test of speed, always out the back. Her best chance of success is likely to come in listed events confined to her own sex.
BLUE JACKK is one ex-handicapper with the potential to bridge the
gap to this level, his effort in the Palace House showing as much, but he didn't seem on his game this day, racing without cover not helping but tending to hang when coming under pressure, failing to make much impression.
BENBAUN dropped out very tamely having tried to match strides with Equiano, his second in France last time showing he is just as good as ever this year, a repeat of which will give him place claims at Royal Ascot.
WI DUD didn't show anything this time, soon struggling out the back.
