Summer Jumpers To Follow: Time To Get It On!

Another week of summer jumping has thrown up another few reluctant heroes, but there are always angles with winners, whether good, bad or indifferent, writes Rory Delargy.

"One to add to the list of horses to follow though is Evan Williams' recent recruit, Get It On. The King's Theatre gelding was previously in the care of Francis Flood, for who he ran a most promising race in a handicap hurdle at Ballinrobe last time, challenging at the last when he pitched and lost momentum, and unable to reel in City Hustler."

The best meeting held over jumps in the last week was an interesting card at Bangor and many of the races are of interest for the future.

The opening juvenile hurdle saw Meetings Man win under a penalty, and while he's a likeable enough type, he's of little interest to us. The horse to focus on here is Sassanian, who has now finished second on his last 6 outings and if there wasn't a doubt about his application before, there certainly is now, as he clearly shirked a battle with the winner. Add him to the list of horses to avoid - we may see him out again shortly.

The following handicap hurdle saw another easy win for the suddenly improved Points Of View, although his future lies in the hands of the assessor and he will probably be competing in much better contests when next seen. He'd already been raised to 124 before the race and it's easy to see his mark bumped up into the 130's after such a romp. He is, however still a novice, so Kim Bailey should have little trouble placing him until the winter months, so he's worth keeping on the right side.

Pilgrims Lane beat The Shoe in the novices' chase and most will forgive the Henderson runner for giving up a winning advantage, either due to mistakes at the last 2 fences or stamina limitations, but he strikes me as the type to travel strongly without doing much when push comes to shove and he'll be worth opposing at short odds in running for a while to come.

The following handicap chase looked a layer's dream with a number of short runners or outright dogs in opposition and so it transpired. Classic Clover spent the entire race figuratively looking over his shoulder for someone to save him from the ignominy of winning, and it was the appropriately named Victory Surge who eventually came to his rescue, but only after the door was kept ajar for an age by the recalcitrant runner-up. It goes without saying that Classic Clover must be opposed, but Victory Surge should be a cheap lay next time he runs and looks gilt-edged. Quaddick Lake, who struggled hoome in third is another who can always be opposed, tending to travel strongly but often stopping as if amiss.

In the last race of the evening, What A Scientist followed up his Newton Abbot win in fair style, but it's one of the vanquished who is of more concern for the future. Thelobstercatcher loomed up dangerously from the rear turning in, but found less than most watchers anticipated and faded into fourth. He certainly won't have been lacking fitness and looks the type of animal who will flatter to deceive again.

One to add to the list of horses to follow though is Evan Williams' recent recruit, Get It On. The King's Theatre gelding was previously in the care of Francis Flood, for who he ran a most promising race in a handicap hurdle at Ballinrobe last time, challenging at the last when he pitched and lost momentum, and unable to reel in City Hustler. He makes his UK debut in the 16:50 Huntingdon when he meets Mutadarrej in a maiden hurdle. The latter was second to Points of View last time at Worcester and will be popular on the back of that horse's subsequent exploits, but he'd looked a tricky ride when winning at Bath recently, and isn't one to go overboard about. Hopefully Get It On can win this on the way to better things.
