Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American football in North America, with the winning team awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The Super Bowl is the final game of a season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year. It is broken into the regular season and the postseason. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, starting with Super Bowl I on January 15, 1967, with the most recent being Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013.

The game was created as part of the deal following the merger between the NFL and the American Football League (AFL), where the two league's champions would meet in a World Championship Game until the merger was officially to begin in 1970. Following the official merger, each league was reformed as conferences, with the Super Bowl being played between the conference champions.

Super Bowl Sunday - the day the game is held each year - has become something of a national holiday in the United States, behind only Thanksgiving Day as the biggest day for food consumption in the country. Super Bowl is also among the most-watched sporting events in the world, second to the UEFA European Champions League final as the most watched annual sporting event in the world.

Currently, the National Football Conference (NFC) leads the American Football Conference (AFC) with 25 victories to 22. The Pittsburgh Steelers hold the record for Super Bowl victories with six. The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers are currently tied for second with five Super Bowl titles each, and the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants sit joint third with four championships.

The Super Bowl MVP is handed to the game's most influential player. The award has been dominated by quarterbacks in recent years, with Peyton Manning, Eli Manning (2), Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Joe Flacco all earning the Super Bowl MVP awards between 2002 and 2013.

Thirteen other NFL franchises have won at least one Super Bowl, while ten teams have failed to win a Super Bowl after appearing in the game. Despite winning the last NFL Championship before the merger, the Minnesota Vikings hold the unwanted record of being the first team to have appeared in four Super Bowl games without success. That record was, however, overshadowed by the Buffalo Bills' record of reaching four Super Bowls in a row, going on to lose every one of them.
