Sam Gilley and Ishmael Davis collide at super welterweight.
All eyes are on the stunning Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday as Chris Eubank Jr faces Conor Benn in a tantalising rematch. The rivals meet in a 12-round contest, with fight fans hoping this bout is as good as the classic served up back in April when Junior won a points decision over the Destroyer.
Boxing betting writer and former fighter Frankie Monkhouse previews the main event for Betfair readers, and you'll find that article at Betting.Betfair. On this page, we focus on the pick of the undercard, covering three mouth-watering fixtures: Azim vs Scobie, Catterall vs Essuman, and Gilley vs Davis.
Sam Gilley vs Ishmael Davis
Saturday, 19:00
Early in the evening, Sam Gilley fights Ishmael Davis in the super welterweight category. Both men are English, with London's Gilley ranked fourth in the UK at the weight, and Leeds fighter Ishmael Davis sitting down in 12th.
Gilley brings an impressive CV, showing 18 wins against one defeat and a draw. He has nine knockout wins on his card and has lost only to Danny Ball, dropping a ten-round points decision back in 2021. He drew with Gideon Onyenani at Portman Road in the summer.
We last saw Davis in action when doing as expected and beating Elliot Eboigbe in Leeds after six rounds. Ishmael did lose three in a row before that, including a points defeat to Josh Kelly at Wembley Stadium in September 20224.
If things go as I expect, Gilley will upset the odds and win. Davis lost those three fights on the bounce before beating a man who had a 1-14-0 record. How much love does he have left for the game? We'll find out, but I'm siding with the form fighter at better odds.
Adam Azim vs Kurt Scobie: Back Azim on points @ 11/43.75
Adam Azim v Kurt Scobie
Saturday, 20:00
Saturday's show pairs Adam Azim and Kurt Scobie at super lightweight, and you can follow every punch live on DAZN. The bout is scheduled for ten rounds, but with plenty of power on show, few boxing enthusiasts expect this one to test the scoring judges at ringside.
Adam Azim brings a 13-0-0 record, with ten wins coming inside the distance. The 23-year-old from Slough is currently ranked number one in the UK and fourth in the world. Victory would edge him towards major honours. First, he must defeat Scobie, an opponent with an 18-1-0 record, with 16 KOs and one stoppage loss. The American is ranked 14th in his homeland, and a lowly 57th on the global charts.
Scobie brings power, but he'll face a fantastic fighter in Azim, who will have the strength of the crowd behind him in London. Azim is the pre-fight favourite, and we shouldn't ignore his 77% KO average. But I don't expect the Englishman to take any unnecessary risks. He'll use his boxing skills and range to rack up the rounds and collect a points win.
Jack Catterall vs Ekow Essuman
Saturday, 21:00
This is a fight that interested me even before it was announced, and it's a bout that could shape the future of both men. Jack Catterall won and lost against Scotland's former unified world champion, Josh Taylor. Ekow Essuman fought and beat Taylor in Glasgow recently, silencing the home crowd. The winner of this fight will race up the rankings, moving towards a shot at an important title, leaving the other to contemplate their future in the game.
Catterall arrives with a 31-2-0 record, winning 13 fights by stoppage. He's ranked first in the UK and fifth in the world, but his recent efforts do little to inspire confidence in the pre-fight betting favourite. The southpaw lost on points to Arnold Barboza Jr before beating Harlem Eubank in Manchester last time on a technical decision following a head clash.
I'm a big fan of Essuman after watching from ringside in Glasgow as he ground out a points win over Josh Taylor. Like his opponent, Ekow is a slow starter, but goes from strength to strength as the fight unfolds. He has lost only once in 23 fights, with the spare coming on the scorecards. He'll be in the fight and dangerous until the end, making him a good bet.
