Two winners yesterday continued this column's hot streak. Timeform highlight a further three SmartPlays at Ayr and Beverley on Wednesday...
It is almost two years since the Linda Perratt-trained Silver Rime last entered the winners' enclosure, but he would look to have excellent claims of getting his head in front once more in the 15:40 at Ayr. Two starts prior to that Newcastle success Silver Rime landed a mile handicap at today's venue, a strong pace helping his cause on the latter occasion, and a similar situation can unfold this afternoon with a number of recognised front-runners in opposition. The seven-year-old ought to be sharper for his reappearance at Hamilton 19 days ago, races off the lowest mark he has been on since this time in 2010 and is taken to get today's SmartPlays off to the best of starts at a very generous price.
Barton Bounty (17:10) appeals as the most likely winner of Ayr's final contest as he looks very well handicapped judged on his good reappearance effort at Musselburgh last week. The five-year-old won three times in 2011 and got his 2012 campaign off to a solid start, briefly meeting some trouble on the rail as he stayed on to finish just over two lengths behind eventual winner Mia Madonna. He is able to race off a 5 lb lower mark, not only making him well handicapped on that form but also on his all-weather form, and he looks well up to getting the better of his 10 rivals.
The final race to take place anywhere in Britain and Ireland today is the 21:05 at Beverley, in which John Louis can take advantage of a weaker race than last time to gain a third career win. The four-year-old was progressive in maidens last year and won a brace of handicaps on the all-weather over the winter before being given a short break. He returned at Newmarket in a well-contested handicap, a race that looks sure to prove strong form given that the first two home are improving and plenty in-behind shaped with promise. Numbering among the latter was John Louis, who failed to settle fully but still run a career-best in a race much tougher than he is used to; he remains unexposed, will find tonight's test more to his liking and rates as bet of the day material.
