Ryan Moore is fancied to have a winner at Haydock

"Baarez is favourite and his claims are clear to see, though we’ve doubts as to whether he should be odds on in a race that also contains Beach Bar."

Three quick-fire bets from around the country make up Wednesday's SmartPlays.

We start at Haydock in their 15:10. Baarez is favourite and his claims are clear to see, though we've doubts as to whether he should be odds on in a race that also contains Beach Bar. We're selecting the second-favourite, whose form up to now stacks up well. He got better by the run at two and was a clear runner-up to Chatez (second and first in two starts since) at Epsom on his reappearance and handicap debut. A rise of 4 lb is lenient; we've no doubt that Beach Bar, who has the assistance of Ryan Moore today, will be winning handicaps from BHA marks in the mid-80s. He could come off second-best again to the promising Baarez, though current prices underplay his chance of upsetting that rival.

There's nothing in Baarez's mould to complicate matters in Beverley's 15:50, which makes offers over 6.05/1especially generous about No Poppy. The fact she's well-handicapped is indisputable; her last win came from a BHA mark 12 lb higher than today's 76, while she was second off 83 just last September. Her slide down the weights in the meantime reflects a failure to get truly involved in her races, though the performances haven't been without promise. Her last run in particular, when she finished within three lengths despite meeting trouble, gives rise to the idea that she, like the Easterby yard as a whole, is coming onto a game. With some cut in the ground likely to help her if anything, No Poppy has plenty in her favour here.

We revisit the Beach Bar theme of overlooked second-favourites with our final selection, Dreese in the 16:00 at Yarmouth. In this case, we're very much on board with the enthusiasm for market leader Foxy Forever, who definitely rates as the likeliest winner. However, for him to be comfortably under 2.01/1 while Dreese is available at double-figures prices is simply skewed. There's potential for Dreese to be a black-type sprinter such is the impression he's created on his first three starts; the attainment has bordered on useful form while he's given the impression he's still learning. There were still signs of greenness as he won from a BHA mark of 77 last time, even so coming through to pass a similarly interesting rival a furlong out with the field more than two lengths back. A rise of 6 lb is lenient on achievement, let along potential, so Dreese demands respect here. An each-way bet is recommended in case the more streetwise Foxy Forever happens to prove too strong.
