There are few bad races in this grade, but even so this one could be at the mercy of Sir Graham Wade
We're going from Pontefract to Brighton this afternoon for our three SmartPlays...
We're starting off in West Yorkshire, taking in the mile handicap at 15:30. There are a few interesting three-year-olds in the field of seven, but the one that stands out is Watt Broderick. He arrived with Ian Williams after three maiden runs in Ireland during 2011 and, after a sharpening run in late-May, got off the mark impressively less than two weeks later, pulling clear with Speedi Mouse who has won twice since. Considering that and then seeing that Watt Broderick has been raised only 5 lb marks him out as potentially very well handicapped and, so long as he's firing on all cylinders after two months off, should be up to winning again.
Brighton hosts its big race of the day just 20 minutes later, over a very similar distance. A field of 16 makes for a potentially tricky heat, but Great Shot is more progressive than the vast majority of them and duly rates as one of the likelier types. He's been running well without winning since landing a race over this distance at Kempton in May, but he shaped as though there could be more to come when finishing strongly at Ascot on King George day, doing easily the best of those on his side of the draw over the shortest trip he's ever faced. The return to a mile should be suitable and, so long as there are no hard-luck stories here, Great Shot is likely to go close.
We then dash back to Pontefract for their feature, the 16:00, which is a 0-95 over twelve furlongs. There are few bad races in this grade, but even so this one could be at the mercy of Sir Graham Wade, who is on a hat-trick following a win at Glorious Goodwood on his handicap debut last week. Returning from more than three months off, Sir Graham Wade came in for a canny ride by Joe Fanning at Goodwood, making his move at the right time and avoiding trouble to prevail by almost two lengths from Mawaqeet. This race would be no more competitive, and under a 6 lb penalty it may prove difficult for any of his rivals to stop Sir Graham Wade going in again.
