"Petticoat Lane got next to no run at Sandown at the tail end of last month, yet still finished within two lengths of the winner. This race is no stronger despite the bigger field..."
Salisbury hosts a strong midweek card and also plays hosts to Timeform's three SmartPlays.
We start with the day's big race, the listed Upavon Fillies' Stakes at 15:55. Races of this type can vary hugely in terms of quality, yet this is probably among the better ones with a few boasting smart form and a few more having the potential to match that. Our selection Kleo is in the latter group and her latent talent is probably being underplayed. She started as a typical Luca Cumani charge, learning as she went in three maidens, though she was kept to those races for her fourth start, which she won, then went handicapping and announced herself with a decisive success at York. Kleo would command respect in any handicap from her new BHA mark of 90 and it's fair to assume that fact won't be lost on Cumani, so that she's been sent into listed company is likely a strong endorsement. You're advised to take the hint at prices approaching double-figures.
There are no such fancy prices about SmartPlay number two, though value can still be had closer to 3.02/1 and Petticoat Lane (16:30) looks to provide it. This is a typical handicap of its type and she is a typical Luca Cumani three-year-old- a little backwards in maidens but ready to spring forward in handicaps. Her debut in these events last time was a narrow career-best, though it came firmly against the run of things. Petticoat Lane got next to no run at Sandown at the tail end of last month, yet still finished within two lengths of the winner. This race is no stronger despite the bigger field and Petticoat Lane, with Ryan Moore aboard, ought to make amends if she gets a better run this time.
The closing race on the Salisbury card (17:00) provides a tight market but looks to us to be a little more weighted than that: Fair Ranger deserves to be favourite. He's dropped a long way in the weights over the last 11 months. The 2013 portion of that was his doing as the result of a dip in form, though his three starts this year have promised a lot more. Each time Fair Ranger has run over six furlongs, probably an inadequate trip, twice he's shaped as though ready to strike, including last time. Today he returns to seven furlongs, which will suit. If he's in the same form, Fair Ranger will set a high benchmark for his rivals.
