"...preference is for Cameron Highland who has only had two starts so far, extremely impressive in a wide-margin maiden victory at Redcar last time..."
Timeform's SmartPlays team bring you their three best bets for Wednesday afternoon...
Fathom Five (14:15) is potentially well handicapped and can win today's opening five-furolong handicap at Epsom for the third time in four years on his debut for his new stable. Fathom Five is racing off a BHA mark 9 lb below the one that saw him take today's race two years ago and the recent switch to Gary Moore could have revitalised the talented eight-year-old. Two of Fathom Five's best three performances have come over course and distance and, if reproducing either of those displays, he has to go close. Admittedly it's a competitive race but at current odds Fathom Five looks good value.
Mister Music sets the standard in the Epsom Derby Trial at 15:20 but Cameron Highland and Thomas Gainsborough are open to more progression than that one and both are expected to improve past the Richard Hannon runner. Of that pair, preference is for Cameron Highland who has only had two starts so far, extremely impressive in a wide-margin maiden victory at Redcar last time. It was impossible not to be impressed with the manner of his win that day and Cameron Highland can successfully make the step up in grade this afternoon.
Ed de Gas has looked a colt of some potential in winning both of his starts so far and can continue his upward curve in the minor event at Caterick due off at 15:45. Ed de Gas is top on Timeform ratings, considered 3 lb in advance of his nearest rival Bordoni, and he should be able to confirm his superiority over the Mark Johnston horse. Ed de Gas' victory in a Wolvehampton Handicap last time was ultra-impressive, the horse scoring comfortably despite the lack of a clear run inside the home straight, and he should be able to take today's step up in class in his stride. He looks the type to develop further as the season progresses and he represents a good bet despite his relatively short odds.
