A winner at 10.519/2 yesterday provides us with a nice pot to go to war with at both Beverley and Newmarket on Wednesday...
Four horses in the Free Handicap at 15:30 hold Guineas entries, with the unexposed Garswood arguably the most interesting of them, but this could just go to the one that boasts a fitness edge having narrowly been denied in a listed race at Lingfield last month, namely Emell. The three-year-old landed a Salisbury maiden last term prior to finishing second at Doncaster over six furlongs, shaping as though a step up in trip would be right up his street. His return this year, over seven furlongs at Lingfield, was a promising one, conceding first run to the eventual winner, and with that run under his belt he could take some stopping as he takes to handicaps on a realistic mark.
There are far too many of interest in the Nell Gwyn to mention them all but the pair that standout are Sky Lantern and Nargys. The first mentioned sets the standard on the form she showed last year when winning the Moyglare at the Curragh and it is easy to put a line through her run in the Breeders' Cup but the one we are going to side with is Nargys, who has just a Yarmouth maiden win to her name but appeals as the type to do better this year. The three-year-old improved with each outing last term, capping her season with a fine second to Just The Judge in the Rockfel over C&D, and she could take advantage of the weight she receives from Sky Lantern to make a winning start to 2013.
Both Bosun Breeze, who won first-time-out last year, and Caranbola, who hails from a yard that has had a couple of winners recently, have to be respected but the one we certainly want on side is Timeform Notebook entrant Jamaican Bolt, who most likely has more still to offer. The five-year-old is relatively lightly-raced but scored twice, at Hamilton and Ayr, last year and shaped well on his first start of 2013 when finishing fifth at Doncaster over six furlongs. The suspicion is that a lack of stamina prevented him from going very close that day and, with this return to the minimum trip very much in his favour, he is expected to return to winning ways.
