Our strongest bet of the day runs in the 15:50 at Leicester in the shape of the Roger Charlton-trained High Church. High Church showed improved form to get off the mark in a 10-furlong handicap at Sandown in July (debut in that sphere) and was value for extra having conceded first run in a steadily-run race. Upped to a mile and a half at Salisbury, High Church shaped much better than the bare result, finishing just sixth having been left with plenty to do after encountering trouble in running, and he is definitely worth another chance. Roger Charlton appears to have found a good opportunity for his three-year-old and he can resume winning ways.
The seven-furlong handicap at 16:20 is competitive stuff, featuring a number of hardy campaigners, but Secretinthepark gets the vote with Richard Hughes a positive jockey booking. Richard Hughes was successful the only time he has ridden Secretinthepark to date, winning a valuable Newmarket handicap, and that was the last time Ed McMahon's charge got his head in front, without a win in ten subsequent starts. He is in good form at the moment, though, arriving here on the back of a good third at Doncaster, and if Hughes can coax a bit of improvement that could be all that's needed to secure the overdue victory.
Karl Burke's juveniles have been in sparkling order this season and Housemaker (16:50) can add to the trainer's impressive tally of winners (12 individual 2-y-o winners since the start of August alone). Housemaker made a very encouraging introduction when finishing runner-up over seven furlongs at Newmarket, especially when you consider that she is bred to come into her own over longer trips next season, and she should relish the extra distance on offer this afternoon. There are some interesting, well-bred rivals in opposition, but Housemaker sets a fair standard for the opposition to aim at and should prove too strong.
