Leicester hosts one of today's SmartPlays

Both of Jo’Burg’s last two starts have suggested his resurgence isn’t over quite yet, a ready winner over today’s C&D followed by a somewhat unlucky fourth at Ripon a week later

We're splitting today's SmartPlays between Redcar and Leicester...

We're starting late today, with Jo'Burg in the 16:00 at Redcar, which is a qualifier for their straight-mile championship. His fortunes have been revived for the switch to David O'Meara this year, by no means the first to take that route for O'Meara, and it's encouraging that he's still not quite worked his way back to his best. Both of Jo'Burg's last two starts have suggested his resurgence isn't over quite yet, a ready winner over today's C&D followed by a somewhat unlucky fourth at Ripon a week later, when he did best of those held up off the pace. Luck in running is something Jo'Burg is always likely to need, especially in a field of 14 like today, but we're confident he sits on a favourable enough mark to eke out another win here.

The Richard Fahey-trained Common Touch bounced back to form in first-time cheekpieces when winning at Newmarket last month and, with that race working out well, he can score again in Leicester's 16:50. The four-year-old progressed well last year, winning twice over seven furlongs at York with the latter success coming over today's BHA rating of 88. He didn't make many waves in his first few starts of 2012, but the application of cheekpieces seemed to spark a revival when getting the better of his 10 rivals on the July course at Newmarket. A brace of next-time-out winners have emerged from that event, and Common Touch has to be respected in his bid to follow up.

Our final SmartPlay comes in the 17:00 at Redcar where Miss Ferney, who came into her own at this sort of time last year, is taken to gain a seventh career win. The eight-year-old entered the winners enclosure three times in September of 2011, including once over C&D, and today's handicap mark is identical to the mark off which she gained the most recent of her wins. Two runs this year, at Newcastle and Thirsk, haven't yielded much success, but the suspicion is that she will now be spot on with those outings under her belt, and she can complete what will, with any luck, have been a successful day for this column.
