"King of Macedon... is now approaching odds on, but he ought to be nearer 1.68/13."
Three handicap bets from Catterick make up Tuesday's SmartPlays.
Our first bet is arguably our most speculative. It comes in the first race (14:00), a nursery in which the speedily-bred Wadi Alamardi looks to warrant plenty of respect on his first start in this company. Michael Bell's charge hasn't shown any more than modest form in maidens, but there has been more encouragement by the run, being blocked off as he made a forward move at Pontefract last time. He's been given a BHA mark of 62 for his efforts so far, but his winning siblings have all been quick and better than modest, so taking a chance on Wadi Alamardi looks well worth the investment.
Bet number two, which comes in another nursery at 15:30, is far more cast-iron, albeit with a price to match. Basically, for King of Macedon to do what he did on debut was pretty impressive. In a six-furlong heat at Ripon, this stoutly-bred gelding stormed to success, pulling out loads for pressure to see off The Hooded Claw, who ran well in the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar last weekend. This step up in trip will suit King of Macedon, another positive ride will see him to good effect at this track and his opening BHA mark of 79 does underplay his ability. With Millys Secret out, he's now approaching odds on, but he ought to be nearer 1.68/13.
Finally, we approach a race for older horses (17:00), but youth is still our focus. Three-year-old Rosie Rebel has only six runs to her name, but you could argue that only one counts given her pedigree. She's very much bred for middle distances and finally got a chance over such a trip when second at Lingfield last month. After dwelling a little at the start that day, Rosie Rebel came with a strong late run, not getting near winner Aloha but doing enough to suggest she's bound to improve again granted sufficient emphasis on stamina. In truth, we might have preferred a greater test if anything, but with a few perhaps set to contest the lead Rosie Rebel should have a race run to suit.
