"A BHA mark of 110 looks far from insurmountable for Smart Money, for all he’ll have to improve on what he showed for Culloty right away..."
Three jumpers in a half-an-hour spell make up Tuesday's SmartPlays...
Our mad dash starts at 14:20, when the Micky Hammond-trained Amir Pasha is fancied to follow up his recent C&D success. Amir Pasha is normally of questionable attitude, but there was nothing wrong with his effort to win last time. Add in the fact that it's not so long ago that he was rated in in the mid-100s and it becomes pretty appealing to give Amir Pasha the chance to go well again, especially considering that previous good spells have tended to last longer than just the one run.
There are a couple of interesting trainer changes in the 14:30 at Lingfield. Paul Henderson is expected to get some joy from Paddy The Stout in time, but of more immediate interest is Smart Money, who makes his debut for Venetia Williams. With all due respect, the switch from Jim Culloty to the excellent Williams would pique interest at the best of times, but with Smart Money remaining relatively unexposed he warrants particular attention. He landed something of a gamble for previous connections on his handicap debut, but failed to build significantly on that later in the spring. Williams has had a superb November by her standards, with her usually late-blooming string yielding 13 wins already this month. A BHA mark of 110 looks far from insurmountable for Smart Money, for all he'll have to improve on what he showed for Culloty right away, with it being hoped that Williams can get him going first time out.
If Venetia Williams isn't the most in-form female in racing at the moment, then it's Lucinda Russell. The Perth trainer's tally of 12 winners for November has been bolstered by a couple of excellent placed efforts by some of her stables brighter lights at Haydock on Saturday. Today she saddles Crackerjack Lad in the 14:50 at Sedgefield and it's fancied that he can go well in an ordinary contest. He is probably something of a fragile sort, evidenced by his lightly-raced profile, though the upshot of that is that he's unexposed for one his age. He's now on a career-low mark of 79 too, courtesy of a couple of runs this season in which he's shaped as though he'll prove better for the outing. Now with a recent run behind him for the first time in over a year, Crackerjack Lad could prove lucrative at this lowly level if he's able to stand his racing.
