"Cast your mind back to July 2011, when a William Haggas-trained two-year-old called Hamble won a maiden over the same C&D as today’s race."
We're mixing East Anglia with the West Country for Tuesday's SmartPlays.
Our first two bets come from Yarmouth in the afternoon, starting with their 14:50, a handicap over (effectively) the minimum trip. A consistent sprinter at this relatively lowly level can be hard to come by, which is why Speedyfix looks such an attractive proposition. A winner at Lingfield in March, he has been runner-up on all starts since, often attempting to come from quite a way back. Speedyfix again ran out of time when finishing three-quarters of a length behind Gowanharry last time and the hope is that he'll be going on at the finish again today; a win and place bet is recommended in case he arrives too late/finds one too good again.
Headline selection of the day comes an hour later on the same card. Cast your mind back to July 2011, when a William Haggas-trained two-year-old called Hamble won a maiden over the same C&D as today's race. The Timeform figure he ran to that day was 82. Today he returns to Britain, following a spell in mainland Europe, on a BHA mark of 57. Recent runs have admittedly been uninspiring, but last summer he was running Timeform figures at least on a par with his Yarmouth victory. It must also be asked that why Marco Botti, a trainer who is increasingly in demand with powerful owners, would take on a horse on such a lowly mark unless he thought he could win races with it. Either way, it is well worth chancing Hamble to make a winning return to Britain.
We turn our attentions to Exeter's evening meeting to round things off, in particular their handicap hurdle over just short of three miles at 19:25. The Fergal O'Brien-trained Well Mett is respected on his hat-trick bid, but with his record somewhat patchy a more sensible bet could be win and place on the other hat-trick seeker, Big Time Billy. She won a couple of races in April, including at Cheltenham, when she shaped as though a return to trips around three miles would draw even more from her. Throw in the recent spate of winners to come from the Peter Bowen yard and we can be fairly confident of Big Time Billy putting up a bold bid, and it's difficult to see anything bar Well Mett beating her if she's on song.
