Two winners and a close second at Catterick yesterday leave Timeform's SmartPlays team feeling confident ahead of Tuesday's three bets...
Outrageous Request was a decent winner at Lingfield in December but he benefited from a sound tactical ride that day and preference in Southwell's 15:40 is for Arr' Kid, trained by Keith Dalgleish. The yard have done well with fibresand debutants in recent weeks with Basingstoke and Frankthetank both making winning starts and Arr' Kid could soon be added to that list, particularly with this step up in trip looking ideal. The trip is the key point here really as the four-year-old has often shaped as though the test of stamina will be right up his street, and he is fancied to prove the theory here.
The 16:10 is an interesting affair, with a couple of likely improvers and some solid performers at this level featured. The Hughie Morrison-trained Fruit Pastille certainly falls into the former camp, hinting at ability in maidens prior to making her handicap debut at Lingfield last month. She was easy to back that day so it's hardly surprising that she failed to improve as expected but there were excuses, being hampered a furlong from home and appearing unlucky not to finish closer. Fruit Pastille remains open to further improvement and should go close.
Our final selection goes in the 16:30 at Ayr, a race featuring two Irish raiders and it is with one of those that we side, namely the Gordon Elliott-trained Barneys Honour. The 10-year-old scored on three occasions over hurdles-fences last term and has shaped well enough, under a fairly inexperienced pilot, the last twice, notably so at Leopardstown last month. A. P. McCoy takes over in the saddle now and, with a couple of front-runners in opposition, things could set up nicely for this renowned hold-up performer.
