"Last year was a relatively quiet one, but the signs were more encouraging for Gottcher on his first start for Keith Dalgleish last time..."
Three bets from Catterick make up Tuesday's SmartPlays...
Catterick is all about speed, especially on the five-furlong course, over which our first featured race (15:15) is run. Speed is something that Gottcher has displayed in abundance during his career, especially as a three-year-old. Last year was a relatively quiet one, but the signs were more encouraging for Gottcher on his first start for Keith Dalgleish last time, showing some of his old dash when third at Musselburgh. Now a whopping 15 lb lower than for his sole handicap win, Gottcher is clearly well in and wouldn't need to find much more than on his reappearance to capitalise on this further drop in grade.
We are taking another well-treated sort in the following contest at 15:45 over just short of 14 furlongs. Around this time last year, Party Line showed a spurt of improvement, winning a trio of 12-furlong events before going off relatively well fancied for the November Handicap. She hasn't been at her best this year, but a drop in the weights has resulted and she looked back in better heart when third at Carlisle last week (runner-up won yesterday). Having looked well up to staying this sort of trip in the past, especially given a sharp track, it's worth taking a chance on Party Line continuing her revival: if she does, she ought to be much shorter than current quotes around 4.03/1.
Speed is again one of our main arguments in the 16:45. David Nicholls trains both Tajneed and Majestic Manannan, with son and stable jockey Adrian choosing the former, but at current prices a win-and-place bet on the latter could be a more prudent choice. Having both the speed to compete over five furlongs and the ability to last over six, this looks an ideal scenario for Majestic Manannan, who is running off the same mark from which he was second at Pontefract last week. Granted, it's a career-high mark and he'd probably be susceptible to anything with a significant amount in hand, but there's every reason to think Majestic Manannan will run into the places at least.
