Mark Johnston's Flashlight drops in grade at Epsom

A return to the level of form shown at Ripon three starts ago would make Flashlight highly competitive in this company and he shouldn't be underestimated...

Yesterday's SmartPlays highlighted two winners at BSP 3.65 and BSP 5.58. Check out today's recommended bets...

Picture Dealer compromised his chance at Goodwood by breaking slowly but he had been in excellent form prior to that, landing gambles on two occasions, and he can bounce back to winning ways in the 14:50 at Epsom. Gary Moore's sprinter had shown admirable consistency earlier in the season but his form really took off when justifying strong support at Newmarket three starts ago under today's rider, Ryan Moore. Well fancied at Goodwood on the back of wins at Newmarket and York, Picture Dealer simply blew all chance at the start, but he did well to pass so many horses, proving that he still remains in good heart, and he should go well provided he breaks on terms.

Flashlight produced a disappointing performance at Newmarket last time but the seven-furlong handicap (15:55) at Epsom this afternoon represents a drop in grade for Mark Johnston's three-year-old and he may provide a bit of value. Both of Flashlight's victories have come on an artificial surface - once on the Wolverhampton polytrack and another on the Southwell fibresand - but he has proven to be equally as effective on turf, putting in a number of good efforts in defeat. A return to the level of form shown at Ripon three starts ago would make him highly competitive in this company and he shouldn't be underestimated.

Our final SmartPlay of the day runs in the concluding two-mile handicap (17:50) at Ripon as we side with Mister Carter. Wearing a visor for the first time, Mister Carter, who had been on a sharp downward spiral, looked to return to some sort of form at Thirsk last time, finishing third but shaping best of all as, in hindsight, he was committed for home too soon. That was Mister Carter's third start for the shrewd Ian Williams yard and he is certainly of interest from this sort of mark. He looks like a leading contender with the headgear reapplied.
