Explosive Power - 15:10 Pontefract

Explosive Power improved with every run as a two-year-old, culminating in a close fifth in a listed event at Doncaster in the Autumn, and looks the type to find even more improvement this year. He starts life in handicaps from what seems a relatively lenient mark given how progressive he was last season and with conditions looking no issue, he should go well providing he is ready to go first time out. Haley Bop's last run was surely too bad to be true she and is feared most.

Lord Ben Stack - 16:20 Pontefract

Lord Ben Stack was considered by connections to be good enough to run in the Dante last season and although he was not quite up to that level, it does suggest that he is highly regarded by connections. He was unlucky not to win his next start in handicap company, having to switch when making his effort and just failing to get up before the line. The handicapper has not overreacted to that effort, raising him only 3 lb, and he looks the type to improve further as a four-year-old. Master of Finance won this race last year and may be the one to follow him home.

Deputy Commander - 16:35 Ludlow

A competitive looking handicap but the one to side with here may be Deputy Commander, who improved for the fitting of a tongue tie when a ready winner at Uttoxeter over the weekend for his in-form trainer, and a 7 lb penalty may not be enough to stop him if he can cope with being turned out quickly. He is still lightly raced for a seven-year-old and more improvement is possible especially considering the way he won his last race. The main danger will be Drumlee Lad who looked a different proposition for his new stable when winning at Doncaster, though an 11 lb rise in the weights may just find him out.
