"Mister Fantastic is potentially better treated than anything and gave a strong hint that he’s poised to strike last time."

After being narrowly denied a 422/1 treble yesterday, Timeform's SmartPlays team search for more winners at Newton Abbot.

The 17-furlong handicap hurdle at 14:40 is far from the worst 0-105 you'll see, with Hold The Bucks seeking a hat-trick and Lucky Sunny looking to catch a break back over timber. Still, bottom-weight Mister Fantastic is potentially better treated than anything and gave a strong hint that he's poised to strike last time. He could manage only tenth at Chepstow that day, though it was a stronger race than today's and rider Charlie Wallis never really put him in the race, accepting his fate quite some way out. A few summers back Mister Fantastic won from a BHA mark of 92, so if he's back on song now 81 ought to be well within his grasp. At current prices he's worth chancing.

The 15:10, a staying handicap chase, is ostensibly a much higher quality of race but in reality is something of a match between the lightly-raced Gotoyourplay and Camden. The former's win record speaks for itself, though he doesn't have the profile of a horse that will respond well to a three-week turnaround following a lengthy break. We therefore side with Camden, who has gone up just 5 lb for finishing second at Chepstow last time, fully 23 lengths clear of the rest which include three horses that have run well since. Well handicapped on most readings of that form and evidently suited by testing conditions, Camden makes more sense as a bet than Gotoyourplay, whose claims are nonetheless respected.

We end with the 16:10, which again probably isn't as competitive as the numbers suggest. Valid Point and Roll The Dice aren't to be dismissed, though suitability to soft ground and wellbeing respectively put doubts there. There are no such concerns with Proud Times, who seems to find all ground coming alike to him and is still in the form of his life. Winner of four races in the winter, Proud Times ran right up to form when second at Southwell a couple of weeks ago and now has Aidan Coleman to assist. For all he's adaptable, he seems especially proficient on testing ground at flat, left-handed tracks, which gives him another little lift compared with his rivals.
