Thursday's Timeform SmartPlays take place at Doncaster and Epsom...
We get underway in the 13:50 at Doncaster, where the William Haggas-trained Sentaril is expected to bounce back from her flop at York in July and land the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes over seven furlongs. The three-year-old looked an exciting prospect when winning her first two starts in impressive style, including over C&D on the second occasion, before running an excellent race to finish second in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. She left the impression that she was the best horse at the weights that day, held-up and travelling smoothly but being forced to wait for a gap two furlongs out before finishing strongly, left with too much ground to make up but worthy of plenty of credit for getting as close as she did. The race at York presumably came too soon and she is well worth supporting in her bid to get back on track.
The 14:55 at Doncaster is the scene of our next SmartPlay, where Wild Coco, who made a winning return at Goodwood, looks set to enter the winners' enclosure once more. The four-year-old made a most promising start last year, making an eyecatching debut before winning twice, including when getting the better of Meeznah at Newmarket. She was not in the same form when finishing down the field on her subsequent two starts, but was given almost a year off prior to landing the Group 3 Lillie Langtry convincingly last month, having today's main rival Estimate just under three lengths behind in third. Trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who has won this race five times, has given Wild Coco plenty of time to recover from her exertions, and she is fancied to go well this afternoon.
We switch our attention to the action at Epsom for our final selection, where Avonrose (16:45) looks to have conditions to suit and is taken to gain her fourth win of 2012. The five-year-old exploited her reduced turf mark when scoring at Newbury in May and got back to winning ways over C&D last month, racing freely in front but keeping going well to see off Serene Oasis by a length. Avonrose was not in the same form when fifth at Nottingham last time, but is unlikely to face much competition for the lead today and, at a venue where track experience counts for plenty, looks to have an excellent chance of coming home in pole position.
