"The race is as competitive as you would expect... but even so the morning price about Get Back In Line has pleasantly surprised us."
Thursday's UK SmartPlays comprise three jumps bets, including a couple on the first day of the Hennessy festival at Newbury...
Our first selection runs over the Hennessy C&D, in the amateur riders' handicap at 12:55. By far the least exposed in the field is Susquehanna River. The chances are we'd still be calling him progressive rather than merely unexposed but for the blunder he made at the ninth when he ran at Aintree last month. That error removed any chance of Susquehanna River making it two from two over fences following a successful debut at Wetherby, but in the context of this field one slip is more than forgivable. There's also the fact that Newbury, though admittedly no cakewalk, poses a less stern test of a young chaser's jumping than Aintree's stiff obstacles. This longer trip too can only draw more from Susquehanna River, who on balance is well worth giving another chance to.
We make a quick trip to Taunton for SmartPlay number two. This one is also a relatively unexposed chaser. Bullet Street (13:40) showed fairly useful form over hurdles for the Evan Williams yard last season and made an encouraging chasing debut when finishing fourth at Ludlow a couple of weeks back. Not for the first time, he was looked after once his chance had gone, yet still finished within hailing distance of a few interesting sorts. The sole concern comes from his jumping. Although Ludlow and Taunton are both sharp, right-handed tracks, the test of jumping is far greater here than in Shropshire. The hope is that Bullet Street has derived enough from his initial experience to do himself justice today. If he does, his largely-exposed rivals could find him difficult to resist.
We return to Newbury for the race of the day, the Gerry Feilden at 15:15. The precedent for our selection was set on Saturday, when unexposed Jonjo O'Neill handicapper More of That scored in taking fashion at Haydock. Now Get Back In Line, who has a similar two-from-two profile ahead of this handicap debut, is the focus of our attention. The second of his two runs so far came at Catterick, where he toyed with a field that contained a good number of borderline-useful sorts, including Special Catch (third to More of That on Saturday). As such an opening BHA mark of 127 looks lenient, even allowing for the vast improvement Get Back In Line is open to. The race is as competitive as you would expect, with Puffin Billy, Chatterbox and Irish Saint already having competed at a higher level, but even so the morning price about Get Back In Line has pleasantly surprised us.
