Today's lead selection runs at Wincanton

"An opening handicap mark of 128 is fair on what Beachfire has achieved over timber so far and potentially very lenient on his Flat form, so a bet at around 6.05/1 looks a good one if he’s to reveal any of his latent class."

We're mixing it up after an agonising day yesterday (a win and two seconds), with a bet from each of the day's jumps meetings.

We're returning to one that has done the business for us recently for our first SmartPlay. The 13:30 at Market Rasen is a stronger race than the one Suburban Bay bolted up in last week, but that's not to say it's ultra-competitive and he's almost certainly got a win in him under a penalty if the visual impression of last week's win is anything to go by. The fact he's in something of a sustained run of good form also encourages. The unexposed pair of Present View and Talkin Thomas are likely to pose the greatest threat.

To Wincanton next for arguably the race of the day, a useful handicap hurdle at 13:50. A shortlist for this contest would be a misnomer, but regardless of length it's bound to be headed by Beachfire. His profile should be familiar to those with a working knowledge of John Ferguson's yard, or indeed anyone who watches Royal Ascot as he won the Wolfreton Handicap there a couple of years ago. Three hurdles runs have offered promise more than a mirroring of his smart Flat form, with an emphatic defeat at the hands of the promising Zamdy Man last time owing no small amount to tactics. An opening handicap mark of 128 is fair on what Beachfire has achieved over timber so far and potentially very lenient on his Flat form, so a bet at around 6.05/1 looks a good one if he's to reveal any of his latent class.

The market could tell us our fate in the 14:15 at Chepstow, but if it speaks positively around 5.04/1 would be a fine price about Radmores Revenge. He's making his first start for Sophie Leech after six months off. You'd expect Leech to do at least as well with a given horse as Radmores Revenge's former trainer John O'Shea, while he arrives today on a good mark in any case. Although this two-mile trip may prove a bit shorter than ideal, the undulations of Chepstow and today's heavy ground can hopefully combine to make a suitable test for Radmores Revenge.
