"The combination of the return to sprinting, a decent handicap mark and the handy apprentice Robert Tart taking over in the saddle could just see Onceuponatime snap his losing streak..."
Having hit the mark with winners at 7.06/1 and 6.611/2 yesterday, the Timeform SmartPlays team is confident of registering further success on Thursday...
We get underway in the competitive, 15-runner conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle at Doncaster at 13:20, with the Sue Smith-trained Coverholder taken to follow up his success at Catterick in December. The six-year-old finished runner-up in a bumper for Nicky Richards and came good at the second time of asking for Tim Vaughan, admittedly in a race that had little depth to it, but he managed to beat one that was well treated on old form convincingly by two and a quarter lengths. Coverholder has since joined the yard of Smith, potentially remains capable of better still and looks to hold a decent chance of scoring immediately for his new connections.
We make the switch to the all-weather for our second bet, which comes in the 18:35 at Wolverhampton. The Richard Fahey-trained Going Grey remains relatively unexposed, as does Basingstoke on his first start for Keith Dalgleish having left Andrew Balding, but the one we are interested in is Monzino, hailing from the yard of Michael Chapman. The five-year-old matched the pick of his form, on return from a short break, when readily scoring twice at this venue under today's 7 lb claimer Gerard Galligan, and he can be forgiven his defeat last time as the return to a mile and a half seemed to stretch his stamina. However he shaped as if still in good form that day and, with today's distance expected to be much more suitable, he seems sure to make a decent fist of getting back to winning ways.
Or final selection runs in Wolverhampton's final event at 20:05, a six furlong handicap. The Jeremy Gask-trained Exkaliber is likely to prove popular from a good draw in stall one, with the four-year-old having returned to form since being fitted with a tongue tie, but the one at the head of the weights, Onceuponatime, could be well-treated and he is the one we will side with. It is almost three years since the eight-year-old last won but he bounced back from a series of poor efforts when third over C&D last month; there have been excuses on his two outings since, being hampered on his penultimate start before finding seven furlongs too far last time, and the combination of the return to sprinting, a decent handicap mark and the handy apprentice Robert Tart taking over in the saddle could just see him snap his losing streak.
