We're still at the time of year when we can suspend our disbelief about a horse that showed its first form from 19 lb out of the weights last time. With that said, Mr Mistopheles (14:40) is no exposed yak. He was making his handicap debut when short-headed by Deny at Sedgefield last time, his relative inexperience possibly crucial in such a tight finish. The handicapper has since had his say, Mr Mistopheles now finding himself 5 lb higher than that day, but a modest level of form would still be enough in all likelihood and we have faith in Philip Kirby drawing as much from his recently-acquired charge. While Mr Mistopheles has rather come from nowhere, we've been waiting a long time for Lovey Dovey(15:10) to come good, selecting her as a horse to follow recently only for her yard to suffer a lean year. She returned from a lengthy absence last time looking more like the horse we'd thought, taking what had looked a competitive race of its type over this C&D in July. Presumably held back since to remove any possibility of her 'bouncing', Lovey Dovey has the ability to defy her new mark considering her bumper form as well as what she showed on her reappearance, so if she can do the business again we'd expect her to go very close.

Our final bet comes in the big race on the card, the two-mile-five-furlong handicap chase at 16:10. We're asking you to cast your mind back to last November, when Buck Mulligan dropped into a 0-130 at Sedgefield and took advantage of the lower grade to score off a BHA mark of 127. For the first time since, Evan Williams' charge finds himself in the same grade, and off the same mark. Recent runs haven't been devoid of promise, and at current prices it's worth taking a chance on Buck Mulligan to recapture his best, principally at the expense of hat-trick chasing Fairwood Massini, who has been raised 16 lb for his two recent wins.
