Our first bet on Sunday runs in the nine-furlong maiden (15:05) as we side with the Richard Hannon-trained Carthage. The Hannon/ Hughes combination are always worthy of respect, particularly at Goodwood, and they team up with the once-raced Carthage who created a good impression in a strong-looking maiden at Newmarket 17 days ago. An expensive purchase, Carthage shaped with plenty of promise as he picked his way through rivals late on under a hands-and-heels ride, leaving the impression that he is capable of better. He should have derived tremendous benefit from that run and should be a different proposition this afternoon.

We once again turn to the Hannon/ Hughes combo as we select their representative, Black Caesar, in the seven-furlong nursery at 16:15. Only ninth on debut, Black Caesar left that form well behind when landing a six-furlong maiden at Newbury, making all and asserting close home. He should prove as effective back up in trip and remains with plenty of potential having made just the two starts. Pretty Flemingo and Never To Be are others to consider but Black Caesar created a good impression at Newbury and shades the vote.

The penultimate race (17:15) looks like a competitive one-and-a-half mile handicap but Squire Osbaldeston starts life in handicaps on a fair-looking mark and should be sided with. Squire Osbaldeston returned from five months off to readily open his account at the fourth time of asking, quickening well to win a 10-furlong Lingfield maiden, and he is undoubtedly capable of showing better form. Squire Osbaldeston impressed with the way he moved through the Lingfield contest and a BHA handicap mark of 85 doesn't look prohibitive for such a well-bred, unexposed horse haling from a top yard. He can take this first step on his way to climbing the handicap ranks.
