Timeform UK SmartPlays: Sunday August 12
Two of today's SmartPlays come from Folkestone.

A number of these haven’t had much racing, but in truth promise has been relatively thin on the ground and it could be that Madame St Clair will be left with a straightforward task...

We're covering both of today's UK meetings in our SmartPlays...

The real action is seemingly in Ireland today, the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh their highlight, but that's not to say there aren't bets to be had at Folkestone and Leicester. We start at the former track, specifically with their six-furlong fillies' handicap at 15:30. Top on Timeform ratings is Links Drive Lady, who has belatedly found her feet for her new stable of late, matching last year's form on her penultimate start before winning at Leicester last time. She was arguably even more superior than the bare result that day, well on top inside the last, and with her being a consistent sort in general there's no reason to think she won't give another good account here. She's also drawn relatively close to the vital stands' rail, so is unlikely to be undone by the draw.

Leicester probably has the better of the two British meetings, and although their feature at 15:15 isn't one to get heavily involved in the following race at 15:45 could be. There are a few lightly-raced sorts in attendance, but none would have the obviously progressive profile of Cape Explorer. Given three quick runs in maidens during the spring, James Tate brought Cape Explorer back earlier this month for his handicap debut, in which he made short work of an opening BHA mark of 63 to score relatively easily over an extended mile at this track. It's obviously early days where the value of the form is concerned, though runner-up Casa Bex filled the same spot at Kempton earlier in the week (ran to a similar level on Timeform figures) and the chances are Cape Explorer, raised just 7 lb for his efforts, won't have to find all that much improvement to follow up.

We return to Folkestone for their finale at 17:00, another fillies' race this time over the best part of ten furlongs. A number of these haven't had much racing, but in truth promise has been relatively thin on the ground and it could be that Madame St Clair will be left with a straightforward task. She won a seller upped to twelve furlongs for the first time then, having left Brian Meehan, showed further progress when just touched off back in handicap company at Kempton last time, forced wide and finishing with a flourish. Assuming she can translate that improvement back to turf, Madame St Clair can get back to winning ways in this race.
