Today's three SmartPlays come from Newcastle...
We're waiting until the fourth race to get stuck into this Newcastle card. That race arguably presents the best bet of the day, though, as Imjoeking looks to hold outstanding claims on his second start in a handicap. A point, bumper and maiden hurdle winners, Imjoeking was a narrow second on his handicap debut at Carlisle last time, leading on the bridle two out but caught late by My Idea, who'd had the run of the race. Nonetheless, it was a performance that marked Imjoeking as one ahead of his mark and, just 1 lb higher today, can prove it. The fact he's a point winner raises some doubt over this sharper test, but such was the way Imjoeking travels it's not anticipated to be a problem.
SmartPlay number two runs in the next race at 16:20. It's a race that could centre on the unexposed pair of Full Speed and Rain Mac, both having Flat form that suggests they are well handicapped from modest hurdles marks. Rain Mac could be the better treated, but Full Speed has shown a greater aptitude for hurdling up to now so he gets narrow preference. The better ground could be key for Full Speed, as most of his best Flat form has come under less-testing conditions than he faced on his handicap debut last time.
Finally, we arrive at the 16:50, a three-mile handicap chase featuring a number of familiar faces. The one for us is the sound-jumping Beneficial Reform, who has been dropped 2 lb for running an excellent second in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster early last month. All his best efforts have admittedly come on Town Moor, but there's no reason that Beneficial Reform shouldn't be able to translate that sort of performance to Newcastle and, up against a bunch of larger exposed or out-of-sorts opponents, this looks a fair opportunity for him to get back into the winners' enclosure.
