No Royal Ascot SmartPlays today, with selections instead coming from Newmarket and Ayr.
The second race on Newmarket's card (14:40) seems fairly competitive, but Ian Wood's Quasi Congaree looked as though he might be on his way back last time and can capitalise on a good mark at a track that he has gone well at in the past. At Bath last time, he made good progress two furlongs out to hold every chance but faltered in the closing stages, leaving the impression he made his effort too soon. Neil Callan takes over in the saddle today and it would be no surprise to see Quasi Congaree add to last summer's C&D win.
Mark Johnston saddles two in the 15:30 at Ayr, and the one to be interested in is Bells O Peover. A winner three times last year, Bells O Peover struggled initially this term but showed signs of a return to form when third behind Blackstone Vegas at Pontefract last time, shaping better than the bare result having been sent on four out. Bells O Peover is 1lb lower than for the last of those aforementioned wins and can make the most of it dropping back in trip.
Takealookatmenow burnt her rivals off at Ripon last time and won't be easy to peg back if in the same mood at Ayr (16:40), but Michael Bell's Dubai Sunshine ran a fine race when third in a competitive contest last time and a reproduction of that effort will probably suffice. That form looks even stronger now than at the time, with the winner and runner-up both having scored since, and with William Twiston-Davies taking 7 lb off what already looked a workable mark, Dubai Sunshine should give Takealookatmenow something to think about.
