The William Haggas-trained Westwiththenight improved a chunk when winning on her reappearance at Doncaster and, although she was no match for another progressive sort when second at Ascot on her most recent outing, she is likely to take some beating in York's 14:40. The four-year-old came up against Clive Cox's Gifted Girl at Ascot, who has since finished second in a Group 3 at Epsom, so her form reads well and the suspicion is that she remains capable of better still herself. 

The Ganton Stakes, due off at 15:15, could be at the mercy of the Richard Fahey-trained Ladys First as it is possible to pick holes in the majority of her seven rivals. Questioning heads the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings but he is a quirky sort that cannot be relied upon with a similar comment also applying to Stipulate, who will sport first-time blinkers in an attempt to straighten him out. Sir Patrick Moore also figures prominently but his Greenham effort has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as he was well positioned, so Ladys First makes by far the most appeal. She is a reliable filly who has acquitted herself well in pattern company so far this year, finishing third in the Middleton Stakes and filling the same position in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom. This assignment represents a slight ease in grade, and she seems sure to give a good account. 

On paper the six furlong sprint at 17:20 looks a competitive event but Polar Venture, also trained by William Haggas, could take some beating. The four-year-old was raced exclusively on the all-weather until his most recent outing at Haydock, where he could only manage to finish fifth, but in reality little went right for him that day, stumbling upon leaving the stalls and then being switched to race down the 'wrong' side. He showed more than enough that day to suggest that he can translate his polytrack form to the turf, and he holds an obvious chance of returning to winning ways.
