David Pipe can have another big-race winner on Saturday

"Unbeaten in five starts so far, Swing Bowler is certainly bred to do better still, being by Galileo out of Lady Cricket, and shaped as though this greater test at the trip will suit when ultimately scooting up at Musselburgh on New Year's Day."

It really is a super Saturday at Newbury and that's where today's three SmartPlays come from...

If the 13:50, a three-mile handicap hurdle, is a poor relation to the feature Betfair Hurdle then it's only in the same way that Mark Waugh is a poor relation to twin brother Steve. So many of these stayers would be most interesting in any other event that it's tough to pick one, but the remaining potential in Master of The Sea is enough to give him the narrow verdict. His profile to date is straightforward enough, taking off for the switch to handicaps (has won last three) and, although he's now rated 38 lb higher than when he started, everything he's done points towards further improvement for this step up to three miles. Master of The Sea's strong-travelling ways should see him deal with the rigours of a big-field handicap and there's no obvious reason that he shouldn't run a big race today.

The Betfair Super Saturday Chase, or the Game Spirit to those whose long-term memory is better than their short term, has lost some of its lustre with Simonsig's withdrawal, but it makes for a better betting heat now. Indeed, current favourite Wishfull Thinking is there to be shot at and he faces a solid foe in Edgardo Sol. Winner of a couple of handicaps at Aintree last term, including the Red Rum in stunning fashion, Edgardo Sol came up short upped in grade at Leopardstown over Christmas but isn't to be judged harshly on that, especially in the context of this much-easier contest. He's far more solid than any of his rivals here and represents a sound option at current odds of 5.14/1.

Finally, we move on to the big one, the Betfair Hurdle at 15:35. In truth, you could pick 10 of the 23-strong field and still wouldn't be confident of having the winner, but that's not to say value can't be had. My Tent Or Yours, highly respected though he is, doesn't represent such value but Court Minstrel and, in particular, Swing Bowler do. Unbeaten in five starts so far, Swing Bowler is certainly bred to do better still, being by Galileo out of Lady Cricket, and shaped as though this greater test at the trip will suit when ultimately scooting up at Musselburgh on New Year's Day. She was off the bridle before four out at that famously sharp track but responded kindly, stretching an easy four-and-a-half lengths clear of a useful field. A well-run, big-field scenario at a galloping track such as this is likely to bring out the very best in Swing Bowler, at least in terms of what she'll show around two miles, and there's every reason to think she's better than a BHA mark of 134.
