"With Ryan Moore back in the saddle and the return to ten furlongs unlikely to prove an inconvenience, Hillstar is taken to see off True Story..."
The Shergar Cup takes centre stage on Saturday, however we turn to Haydock and Newmarket for our UK Smartplays...
Sir Michael Stoute's Hillstar looks to have a good chance of recording his first victory since June 2013 in the Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock (14:55). Though without a win in seven starts, he has run consistently well in top-class company and a close second to Cavalryman in the Prince of Wales's Stakes received a high-profile boost at Goodwood last week. With Ryan Moore back in the saddle and the return to ten furlongs unlikely to prove an inconvenience, he is taken to see off True Story, who has not lived up to expectations and may be undone by the turn of pace of his main market rival.
Stoute and Moore combine again with Provenance in the 16:00 at Haydock and this beautifully bred filly has a fine chance of landing them another win. She only got up by a short head at Sandown last time, but had to overcome a positional bias that day and found plenty when asked. With improvement on the cards, she should have enough to beat Lockhart and the rest of her rivals.
In the 17:15 at Newmarket, Purple Spectrum appears likely to enjoy the step up to two miles after scoring with a good deal in hand over a mile and six on her last outing at Sandown. This stoutly bred three-year-old has plenty of scope at staying distances and is the one to beat here against the older brigade. Late Shipment returned to form when last seen and can't be ruled out, however preference is for the Queen's unexposed filly.
