It's the fifth and final day of Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, and that is where two of our SmartPlays are in action...
The Stewards' Cup - now run as the 32red Cup - is always one of the most competitive handicaps of the season, but Muthmir (15:50)put up a breath-taking performance when winning at York last weekend and holds obvious claims under a penalty. Muthmir has been steadily brought along by William Haggas - he has raced just six times - but he looks capable of developing into a group-race performer based on the way in which he cruised through his race at York, always looking in complete control as he quickened to the lead to win by one and a half lengths. Muthmir remains open to plenty of improvement and he can take this before making his mark in Group races.
The application of headgear seemed to work wonders for Golden Town when he won a well-contested Newmarket handicap last month, and Godolphin's three-year-old ought to be difficult to beat in the 16:40 back at the same venue. That effort came over a mile but Golden Town should have little trouble dropping back to seven furlongs - he won impressively over seven furlongs as a juvenile - and a 6 lb rise in the weights shouldn't pose too many problems, especially as this appeals as a less-competitive contest. Golden Town's attitude had been called into question after a couple of underwhelming displays earlier in the season, but there was nothing wrong with his resolution last time, and he can follow up.
*There has been a significant non-runner since this was written and Golden Town is no longer a bet at the price.
We wait until the concluding race of Glorious Goodwood 2014 (17:35) for our final SmartPlay as we side with Richard Hannon's progressive sprinter War Spirit. It took War Spirit five runs to get off the mark, but he has been on a roll since dropping back to five furlongs, racking up a hat-trick, and he looks sure to go close again. War Spirit has to race off a 7 lb higher mark than the one he defied to win at Haydock last time, but it is worth remembering that he won with a bit in hand on that occasion, always looking in control, and there could be more to come as he is thriving at present.
