"Frangipanni has yet to race on turf or beyond sprint trips, though there’s no reason at all to think the surface will be an issue while the trip could even be the making of him."

We're paying a visit to Wales first of all, taking in Chepstow's handicap for three-year-olds at 16:10. In truth it's not the strongest event of its type, which only firms up our selection of the well-bred, unexposed Frangipanni. His morning price would suggest that doubts concerning new conditions have prevailed over latent ability. The evidence so far would suggest that's unduly pessimistic. Frangipanni has yet to race on turf or beyond sprint trips, though there's no reason at all to think the surface will be an issue while the trip could even be the making of him. It certainly seemed that Lingfield's sharp six furlongs was the main reason for his slightly substandard effort last time, his win over the same C&D the time before simply a reflection of how much he had in hand given he'd looked in need of further even as a juvenile. Just 6 lb higher now and theoretically under more suitable conditions, prices around 5.04/1 in this sort of contest look generous about Frangipanni.
Our last two bets both come from Thirsk this evening. Repetition is undoubtedly a little better on the all-weather, though it's not by huge margins and there's scant reason why he shouldn't be able to translate a good recent spell on the fibresand back to turf at a corresponding level. If that's the case, he ought to be thereabouts from a mark just 1 lb higher than that he carried to a decisive success over this trip at Southwell earlier this month. The promise of a good test at the trip promises to suit, too, so long as Tom Eaves isn't tempted into a pace battle with frequent front-runner Repetition.
There's an overpriced one in the following handicap over a mile (20:50). The fact that Green Zone remains a maiden is perhaps putting punters off. While it's true that the fact probably has some of its roots in an iffy attitude, Green Zone is surely proved to be a well-handicapped gelding by now and is well worth chancing at the prices. He's been inching towards victory in recent starts, shaping well under aggressive tactics here and second on both starts since. Again, the fact he's essentially been outbattled on both occasions is an uncomfortable one, though there's always the option of a place-bet saver and the salient point with Green Zone is that he should be winning soon.
