"Hawaii Five Nil has some useful bumper form in Ireland and could be a good deal better than his current handicap mark..."

We head north to jumps action at Catterick for our three best bets for Monday...

The contest under consideration first is a novice hurdle over two miles (14:20) and Hawaii Five Nil has the potential to be a good deal better than his current handicap mark. He has some useful bumper form in Ireland, beating Willie Mullins' Turnandgo at Clonmel whilst with Eoin Doyle and narrowly missing out at Fontwell on his first start for Jonjo O'Neill next time. He's been beaten a fair way in three maiden/novice hurdles since but has been considerately handled, presumably with handicaps in mind. Now given an initial mark of 111 and coming back off a break, it would be no surprise to see a much improved performance and even a first trip into the winner's enclosure. Dangers come in the form of Lysino and recent Southwell winner Persian Herald.

It's a staying handicap chase for novices up next (14:50) and Pinerolo has left the impression that the increased test of stamina he'll face here will be right up his street. He's offered plenty to work on since his return from injury in December, shaping well on his first start back over timber and then also when switched to fences. He was given a stiff task at Wetherby last time in the company of Indian Castle and Many Clouds, and today's race looks a far less competitive contest. He appears to have retained all of his ability and is fairly handicapped on the pick of his form, with the racing he's had since December likely to have him just right for today. Diocles got his career back on track last time and may give him most to think about.

It's another horse for the Grand National winning combination of Sue Smith and Ryan Mania which constitutes our final bet of the day in the shape of Blake Dean. He runs in the 19-furlong handicap hurdle (15:20) the manner in which he dug deep to see off a well-handicapped opponent in Scimon Templar at Newcastle last time gives us cause for optimism. He is proven in heavy ground which is essential in what are likely to be testing conditions and he looks the type to have more to offer. His consistency offers further reassurance that he's likely to run well and it may be that he has too much in the locker for his opponents today. There are a couple of dangers in the shape of The Clock Leary who is unexposed and represents Venetia Williams and Bonnet's Vino who will benefit for the return to handicap company.
