Kempton and Wolverhampton offer the usual Monday fare, but Plumpton's looks a relatively tempting card and is therefore the venue for our three SmartPlays...
Races restricted to mares are normally relatively weak affairs, especially when the fields are small, but today's 13:40 is something of an exception to that. The top three on the card- the well-handicapped and resurgent Aimigayle, the comparatively-unexposed Tweeldedrum and last-time-out winner Cannon Fodder- are especially interesting. At current prices, our preference is for Tweedledrum. She improved for the step up to around three miles last winter, winning three from four at one point. She's largely struggled in the face of stiffer tasks since, but ran as well as you'd expect in a listed event at Kempton last time and returns to more realistic company on a fair mark. At more than 4.03/1 in this company, Tweedledrum is worth chancing.
Everyone should be aware by now of the return to form of the Lavelle yard, and that's part of the appeal where Further More is concerned in the 14:10. He's yet to actually show much besides weak finishing, though, so a far more solid betting proposition at a now-attractive price is Mister Wiseman. He's shown consistency of late that belies his Timeform 'squiggle', getting his just rewards when winning at Fontwell last week. That was a conditional jockeys' race, so Mister Wiseman avoids a penalty here, while his rider is able to claim 2 lb more back in open company. There are a couple of other prominent racers in the field, but they are likely to yield to Mister Wiseman who is a habitual front runner. That can only help around this tight track.
Finally, we approach the two-mile handicap hurdle at 14:40. With him having little in the way of tangible form to his name and now returning from a break, it's fair to say we're taking a chance on Tom Sang, though it's quite an attractive gamble. For a start, the Jamie Snowden yard could scarcely be going any better, while he himself has promised to come good on a few occasions in the past. An initial BHA mark of 92 has slipped to 79 after just four runs and, for all the concerns over Tom Sang's soundness, he wouldn't need to realise the full extent of previous encouragement to break his maiden from such a low mark.
