We're off to Scotland on Monday, with Kelso providing Timeform's three SmartPlays...
There are plenty of familiar names in race three, a 17-furlong handicap chase at 15:00. The market's lukewarm treatment of last-time-out winner Prosecco can probably be attributed to ground different from what he usually races on these days, though forecast rain does offset that. There's also the small matter of his best-ever effort, admittedly almost three years ago now but on good to soft ground. Prosecco is a horse that tends to keep his form once he finds it, so a 2-lb rise for his Carlisle success could prove lenient, especially as he won at Wetherby from 4 lb higher not too long ago.
Kelso regulars will certainly know our second selection, too. Or de Grugy (16:30) is as much of a Kelso staple as Gordon Brown and is a six-time course winner, the latest of them coming in December. He followed that with his best run in some time over today's C&D in February, the well-handicapped Mister Marker short-heading him that day. Up 2 lb for finishing 17 lengths ahead of the rest, you fancy that Or de Grugy is among the best-treated in this race; and just about the likeliest to give his running, too.
We switch from in-form veterans to the completely unexposed for our final bet. King of Strings (17:30) showed fairly useful form in bumpers, winning at Market Rasen and not disgraced in a hot race at Haydock subsequently. Two runs over hurdles, one a second-placed finish at this course, haven't revealed the same depths of ability but you fancy that experience and the switch to handicaps might be all that is needed to bring it about. An inclination to take a strong hold has been his main failing so far, but Kelso's hurdles course does offer the chance to let King of Strings stride on with relative impunity if rider Jake Greenall is in an enterprising mood.
