"... in recent runs Dishy Guru has been belatedly showing his full aptitude on polytrack."
Bath has some good bets by Monday standards and it's there we head for today's SmartPlays.
We delve in straight away, as there's a promising brother to Side Glance who's been let into handicaps off 66 in the opener (13:30). Spectator ran three times in 2013, showing promise amid inexperience on the first two occasions and being found out on Lingfield's slippery mile course on his final outing in December. The way his yard have started the season suggest that Spectator is more likely than not to be ready. His opening mark is probably about right on what he's achieved, though what he's likely to be capable of is what makes him of interest today.
Selection two, which runs in the following spring handicap (14:00), doesn't need much explaining from a form perspective: Dishy Guru has won two of his last three on the all-weather. The case to be made is proving his suitability to turf, doubts over which presumably keep him off the top of the betting.
The truth is that the question is being asked the wrong way around: in recent runs Dishy Guru has been belatedly showing his full aptitude on polytrack. A couple of years back he returned to turf following a win at Lingfield and duly bettered it to win on soft ground at Folkestone. Dishy Guru's latest win on polytrack was his best effort on the surface since then and, with ground conditions now matching his very best form, there's little reason to doubt his form on the different surface.
We're looking to the Balding yard again with our final selection. Desert Command (15:00) was strictly a disappointment in 2013, returning just one win, though he improved the best part of two stone along the way. His final start, a short-head second when clear of the rest in a race at Lingfield that worked out well, reads especially well, to the point that we see Desert Command as a bet today even at odds below 3.02/1. As with Spectator, the form of the Balding yard makes fitness less of a concern than might otherwise have been the case.
