"The diminishing field in the final race (17:55) mercifully hasn’t had too drastic an effect on Thorntoun Care’s price- if anything, he looks better value now."
We're grabbing our seat for Saturday's big meeting early, settling down with three bets at Haydock today.
Today could be the day we see a belated return to form for Can You Conga (15:00). He was progressive all the way through 2013 for Kevin Ryan but has struggled for Mick Easterby this year. A fall in the weights has followed and he's now below the mark he last carried to success at Newmarket in August of last year. Taken in isolation that isn't enough to recommend Can You Conga, but his latest run at Thirsk is the clincher. There he teamed up with Philip Makin, making it just the second time he'd partnered a fully-fledged jockey all season, and there was promise in his run. Unfortunately, it was a run that came on the unfavoured side in a big-field sprint, Can You Conga finishing second in his group but only eighth overall. There should be no such inconveniences today, so take a chance on Can You Conga making this the day he announces his resurgence.
In the game of Timeform Top Trumps, 'top with a p' is always a pretty strong hand to play. Therefore we have to respect Random Success in the 16:10, though he represents scant value in the far more important game of beat the layers. Better on that score is Master Bond. Trouble in running is of course and occupational hazard in sprints, but it doesn't derail the idea that by right Master Bond ought to be here looking for a fourth straight win. He was held up at a vital stage at Musselburgh last time and would have gone very close to catching Midnight Dynamo otherwise. Third-placed Tom Sawyer has already done his bit for the form by winning at Beverley, which firms up the idea that Master Bond remains on a winning mark raised 2 lb for his efforts.
The diminishing field in the final race (17:55) mercifully hasn't had too drastic an effect on Thorntoun Care's price- if anything, he looks better value now. He's gone up in form terms as quickly as he has in trip: from flop over seven furlongs to a second-placed finish over 10 and most recently a win at Ayr over 13. That looks solid enough form for the grade and though he's moved up a little here he's also gone up in trip, with one and three-quarter miles likely to see him do better still. Throw in the fact he's unexposed generally and he carries outstanding claims.
