The nursery at 13:50 is the first race on our agenda. There are a couple of entrants- namely Makin The Rules and Damaah- that are due a rise in the weights and they are duly respected, as is the promising No Leaf Clover. However, at a slightly bigger price Kenny The Captain makes could just have the edge on all of them. He represents the Tim Easterby yard, which has supplied the winner of this race in each of the last two years, and his maiden win last time came on soft ground. Kenny The Captain was value for extra above the bare winning margin of two lengths that day, to the extent that a BHA mark of 75 might well understate his ability.

The listed Harry Rosebery Stakes (14:50) contains plenty of speedy two-year-olds, with Mecca's Angel and Excel's Beauty already having featured in a similar contest at York. Fast Trackran in a nursery on his most recent start, but he already had form that would have justified a crack at a higher level and as it was he didn't have to improve to win by a neck. Now upped in class, he looks good value compared with those who've already tried their hand against better opposition.

The Bronze Cup (16:00) might only be the third tier of this week's feature Ayr Gold Cup, but it's a hotly-contested handicap in its own right. A horse who broke his maiden last time wouldn't normally be a natural choice, but Bop It has been on the up for pretty much the whole time he's been with David O'Meara, his emphatic soft-ground success at Haydock last time simply a culmination of that. With only a 5-lb penalty to carry for that success, Bop It is still well handicapped and, provided he doesn't fall foul of the ever-present danger of scrimmaging in big-field handicaps, can double his win tally today.
