"Throw in the fact that conditions are comparable with his better effort in bumpers, as well as the booking of crack conditional Brendan Powell, and Lord of The Dunes is well worth chancing to upset the favourite."
The jumps action at Musselburgh and Fontwell comes under the scrutiny of the SmartPlays team on Friday.
We start at Fontwell, in the novice hurdle for conditional riders at 13:10. Current favourite is Young Hurricane from the bang-in-form Richard Newland yard, but we prefer the chances of fellow hurdling debutant Lord of The Dunes. His bumper form is just behind that of Young Hurricane, but there is plenty of evidence that leads us to think he could have the upper hand over hurdles. Firstly, his trainer Colin Tizzard is going pretty well himself at the moment, while Lord of The Dunes' pedigree would suggest he's likely to derive more benefit from the step up in trip than Young Hurricane. Throw in the fact that conditions are comparable with his better effort in bumpers, as well as the booking of crack conditional Brendan Powell, and Lord of The Dunes is well worth chancing to upset the favourite.
We switch to Musselburgh for a couple of decent handicaps which contain our final two SmartPlays. We start with Simply Ned (14:50), who entered the Timeform Notebook on the back of his eye-catching reappearance at Wetherby last month. Simply Ned shaped as though in need of the run that day, but even so he was only beaten a couple of lengths in what was probably a stronger handicap than he finds himself in today. Generally unexposed, Simply Ned was a ready winner over this C&D just shy of a year ago and surely has more to offer from his current mark.
Our final SmartPlay comes just half an hour later, in a handicap chase over two and a half miles. Plenty look to be in with a chance, but we're siding with Locked Inthepocket. Although an eight-year-old now, Pauline Robson's gelding still looks to be going the right way, posting a career-best effort to finish second over hurdles at Newcastle last time. He's at least a good a chaser when his jumping holds up, and if he's able to transfer his improvement across at the first time of asking he should take plenty of beating. There is a slight concern over Locked Inthepocket's fine record fresh and that, therefore, he may struggle to recapture his Newcastle form anytime soon, but at current prices that niggling doubt is more than allowed for.
