The seven-year-old notched a ninth career success at Goodwood last month, beating today's rival Aye Aye Digby by four and a half lengths, and it is possible to make excuses for his last two starts, missing the break at Brighton before appearing to be stretched by the seven furlongs faced at Kempton. Haadeeth is likely to provide the stiffest opposition this afternoon, but Beat The Bell is a confident selection to get us off to a flying start.

Doncaster's 16:10 is the scene of our second SmartPlay, where Royal Swain, who will appreciate a return to this trip, has an excellent chance of landing the spoils. Trained by Alan Swinbank, the six-year-old won a fair handicap over course and distance on his 2012 return off just a 1 lb lower mark than todays, an effort in-keeping with his very best, and he was not seen to best effect on his most recent start at Haydock, plugging on but looking in desperate need of a greater test of stamina. That circumstance is granted this afternoon, and Royal Swain looks the one to side with.

The Sir Henry Cecil-trained Bon Allumage is a non-runner in Chester's 19:25, which leaves the contest there for the taking for consistent Kenyan Cat. The five-year-old mare scored a brace of wins over course and distance last summer and ran creditably on her return this season at Haydock, beaten less than two lengths. Kenyan Cat looks nailed-on to run a big race, and can round off what will hopefully have been a profitable day for this column.
