Our only bet of the afternoon comes from Musselburgh, in their seven-furlong handicap at 16:20. Dhhamaan fits the correct profile, being an in-form front runner, and is taken as the selection. He won at Thirsk early in the month and shaped as though still ahead of his mark 10 days ago at the same venue, when he probably went off harder than ideal. This sharp track ought to suit a horse who has plenty of speed for this trip and, with his yard remaining in pretty good form, Dhhamaan can get back to winning ways.

Chester is our first port of call in the evening, in particular their fillies' handicap at 19:25. The tactic of taking three-year-olds against their elders over middle distances at this time of year is normally a sound one, but that's not all selection Danat Al Atheer has going for her. Winner of three of her five starts so far and never out of the frame, William Haggas' filly impressed with the manner of her victory at Newbury last time, quickening well to leave behind horses who'd apparently had the run of things. Kept to this trip, but evidently not short of the speed to cope with this sharp track, Danat Al Atheer can make it four from six this evening.

Just 20 minutes later, we're at Newcastle for their big sprint of the evening, the Gosforth Park Cup. Plenty of the usual suspects are in the line-up, several of whom contested the 'Dash' at Epsom, including a new arrival in the Robert Cowell yard from Italy named Jiroft. He would shape well at Epsom, suggesting the run was needed, then went off too hard at Haydock just six days later. Given a short break on the back of that, Jiroft has shown both the speed and the form (won a listed race in Italy, in which Dubai success story United Color finished third) to make us believe he's a smart sprinter and he can belatedly prove that today.
