Timeform UK SmartPlays: Friday February 7

Racing comes from Kempton today
Racing comes from Kempton today

"It may pay to side with No Substitute. who is lightly raced and showed signs of promise at Doncaster in late December..."

Timeform's three best bets for Friday all come from jumps action at Kempton...

We kick off today's proceedings with the 21-furlong novice hurdle (14:00) which contains some interesting hurdling debutants. Whilst Albert Bridge and Boogie In The Barn top that list on their first start over timber, it may pay to side with No Substitute. Although at nine years old he is one of the older novices you'll see, he is lightly raced and he showed signs of promise at Doncaster in late December after two years off. He was almost certainly in need of the run that day, and given that this track was the scene of his best performance over hurdles (second to The Druids Nephew), it would be no surprise to see him build on his reappearance and register a long overdue first success.

Given recent events you oppose Venetia Williams and Aidan Coleman at your peril, and with Lucky Sunny they have chance for yet another winner in the two-mile handicap chase (14:30). Although he's only been with his new handler for two starts, he won twice over fences in the second half of last year and his third at Catterick last time hinted at something of a revival. He's only 3 lb higher than his last winning mark and given trainer and jockey show no signs of relenting in firing in the winners, he gets the vote. There are others of interest in the form of Notarfbad and the frustrating but capable Ultragold.

Our final bet of the day comes in the 21-furlong handicap hurdle (15:05) where Easy Beesy looks to have more to offer in this sphere. He absolutely bolted up off a mark of 83 at Fontwell in October,  but was turned over at long odds on the following week, with the contest probably coming too soon for him. However the winning thread was regained after a break at Towcester in December over three miles, and up to now he's looked more comfortable at this trip. He remains unexposed on his current mark and should be able to continue his excellent run of form for handler Charles Egerton. In The Gate wasn't seen to best effect at Market Rasen last time and looks the main danger.
