Glorious Goodwood 2014 begins on Tuesday

"Preference is given to the equally progressive Ajman Bridge who has improved with every start so far this term..."

Timeform head to the Sussex Downs for the first day of Glorious Goodwood 2014 and advise their three best bets on a cracking card...

We kick off proceedings with the very first race of the meeting, a handicap over an extended nine furlongs (13:55) and it look's a typically competitive renewal. The likes of I'm Fraam Govan and Stomachion both go there with live chances but preference is given to the equally progressive Ajman Bridge.  He's improved with every start so far this term and only narrowly failed to get himself back in the winner's enclosure at Newbury last time where he conceded first run. He's only been raised 2 lb for that effort and if he gets the run of the race this time then it would be no surprise to see him make amends.

It's the Group 2 Lennox Stakes under consideration next (15:05) and given that Richard Hannon has won this on a couple of occasions with three-year-olds, Toomore looks the one the to keep on side. He was Timeform's top-rated two-year-old last season and although he's come up slightly short at the highest level on his last two starts, the step back to seven furlongs won't inconvenience him and he should be able to capitalise on a return to Group 2 company. Last year's winner Garswood and the consistent Gregorian will ensure the selection won't get it all his own way, but Toormore looks a good bet to ensure Hannon and Hughes waste no time in returning to the Goodwood winner's enclosure.

Our final bet of the day comes in the Summer Stakes Handicap over 14 furlongs (15:40) and a chance is taken on Havana Cooler to convert the promise of his recent runs. He's acquitted himself well in defeat in both the Duke of Edinburgh and the Old Newton Cup, and proved his ability over this trip when third in the Melrose Stakes in 2013. Van Percy looks a danger after a creditable run from a wide draw in the Northumberland Plate but these look calmer waters than the selections been racing in, if only marginally, and if he gets the some luck in running then a long-overdue return to the winners enclosure looks on the cards.
