Timeform recommend three tips for Sunday's Irish Derby card

The racing experts at Timeform recommend a trio of bets for Sunday's Irish Derby card at the Curragh...

13:40 Curragh - Progressive Dark Ace could still be ahead of his mark

Heading the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, Dark Ace is a progressive four-year-old sprinter for Ado McGuinness and looks likely to have the Rockingham Handicap run to suit his hold-up style.

He has done all his racing in Britain this year, winning on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and Lingfield in the spring before looking unlucky not to complete his hat-trick at Newbury last time.

Dark Ace was bumped in the closing stages when third to Far Above Dream and would have gone closer still but for that interference, earning the 'Horse In Focus' flag.

15:55 Curragh - Take on favourite with lightly raced Zodiac Bear

Alcantor looks very much the class act in this listed race but he's yet to get near his smart French form in a couple of runs this year so the value looks to lie elsewhere.

It's therefore worth giving a chance to Johnny Murtagh's very lightly raced four-year-old Zodiac Bear who ran an encouraging race after a year's absence at Leopardstown last time.

He'd been improving in leaps and bounds as a three-year-old and remains with potential judged on his keeping-on fourth to Native Warrior in the Ballycorus Stakes.

16:35 Curragh - Expect Epsom form to be turned round on firmer ground

It looks significant that Ryan Moore is keeping his faith in Chester Vase winner Benvenuto Cellini although he flopped in the Derby when down the field behind stablemate Christmas Day who he meets again.

Of course, Benvenuto Cellini was officially deemed a non-runner at Epsom due to having his leg on the running board in the stalls, but the soft ground seemed a far bigger factor in his disappointing run.

He'd looked every inch a potential Derby winner under firmer conditions at Chester though, and he can prove it in the Irish Derby where the ground may not suit Christmas Day anything like so well.
